When to see a Periodontist

Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal treatment can be approached in several ways. Often, your general dentist or hygienist may recommend a consultation with a periodontist if signs of gum disease are detected during a routine checkup or other dental procedures. You may also choose to schedule an appointment on your own, as a referral is not required to be seen at our office.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, we encourage you to schedule an appointment without delay:

  • Bleeding while brushing or eating: Unexplained bleeding during routine oral care or eating is one of the most common signs of periodontal infection.
  • Persistent bad breath: Ongoing halitosis that doesn’t improve with regular brushing or flossing may indicate gingivitis, periodontitis, or the start of a gum infection.
  • Loose teeth or gum recession: Teeth that appear longer or feel loose can signal gum recession and/or bone loss caused by periodontal disease.
  • Related health concerns: Patients with heart disease, diabetes, osteopenia, or osteoporosis are often at higher risk for periodontal infections, as bacteria can spread through the bloodstream and affect other areas of the body.

Oral Health Warning Signs

The inside of your mouth is normally lined with smooth, coral-pink mucosa. Any changes in its appearance may indicate a pathological condition, including oral cancer. Be alert for the following signs:

  • Reddish (erythroplasia) or whitish (leukoplakia) patches in the mouth
  • A sore that does not heal and bleeds easily
  • Lumps or thickened areas on the lining of the mouth
  • Chronic sore throat or hoarseness
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing

These changes can occur on the lips, cheeks, palate, gums, tongue, face, or neck. Pain is not always present with pathology and is often absent in cases of oral cancer. Any unexplained facial or oral pain should also be evaluated. We recommend performing a monthly oral cancer self-examination.

Your mouth is a key indicator of your overall health. Do not ignore suspicious lumps, sores, or changes. Please contact our office so we can assist you promptly.
